June 2020 - Outreach and My research

Youth Outreach

When we first started this project, I thought giving away free masks would be easy. However, finding partner charities can be challenging because people are not always interested in talking to kids. Since we are youth, some people do not take us seriously. This month I contacted a charity and said we wanted to donate face masks for free. The man called me back immediately. When he found out I was a kid, he was suddenly NOT interested. He certainly thought I was going to prank him. I had to show that I was genuine. Gen Z’s don’t always have the best reputation, but we CAN help if we have ideas and show sincerity.

My Research: Reasons why wearing a mask is important?

  1. Wearing masks are important in public places where it is hard to keep 6 feet social distance.

  2. Reduces the spread of germs.

  3. Helps cover water droplets from coughs and sneezes

  4. Helps protect other people from illness

What are ways governors are encouraging people to wear masks?

1. You can’t enter stores unless you wear a masks.

2. Businesses cannot open unless they require face masks.

3. They encourage people to wear face masks in the news and through health clinic and hospitals.

People refuse to wear face masks because they may think

  1. Covid is not a big threat and they won’t catch it.

  2. Masks feel uncomfortable (too young) or they can’t breath (medical reasons).

  3. Masks look scary and cover emotions for hearing impaired.

  4. It is a constitutional right that they chose not to.

May/June 2020 - Raising money and Planning in the time of Covid

Ana and I had a fun time make a video together to introduce our charity. Fundraising during the time of Covid is challenging. It is difficult to ask for money when you can’t see people in person, so we made phone calls and sent letters and emails requesting donations. It is also hard for people to give during this difficult time. Ana is only ten, but seems decent at fundraising through family and close friends. It helps to have friends that have bought Ana’s girl scout cookies for years! We wrote scripts and presented our idea with good result. We are still practicing and improving.

The exciting news is that two charities have requested face masks! The non-profits want to give the masks to their own volunteer, staff and people supporting their mission.

My sister and I made a video or our charity. Lindsey put my voice and pictures to a video with music. It is pretty cool! Our goal is to help protect people with face masks. We found a company that can produce the masks in bulk. That means if we buy in large quantity (1,000+), we can get the masks for as low as $2/ each. The masks usually sell for $7-10. The masks are high quality. They are not like those mediocre masks that hurt your ears. We don’t personally know 1,000 people, but we will donate the masks to charities.

I have been asking for money to buy our face masks through friends, neighbors, and family! Please give a donation to this great cause.

April 2020 - Can kids help in a pandemic?

Helping With

Face Masks

Summer camps are in flux and travel plans are canceled or restricted. We have sheltered in place for weeks! The news is scary. My little sister used to think masks were scary, but with no current vaccine, social distancing is important. People are starting to wear masks everywhere to the store and even to ride a bike.

I thought of donating face masks after my aunt gave a firsthand account of her overrun medical clinic. She is an internal medicine physician and had to catch a patient who passed out from Covid 19 symptoms. She was wearing protective gear and a mask and fortunately did not get infected. Aunt Lily was a great support when I shared my idea to start a website and charity donating non-medical face masks. When the academic year went pass/fail, I started my website.

Since I am not allowed to socialize with anyone outside the family, I had to let my sister help. At first, she annoyed me, but over the weeks we started to plan together and do some activities. Ana is more creative than me and likes to create pictures for the website. She wants to write a story about this summer.

Helping Your Parents

(During Quarantine)

Have you ever wondered how to help your parents? Well these three choices will satisfy your parent’s expectations.
First, you do the dishes. You parents get so annoyed that you use so many plates, bowls, and silverware. For example help them out by scrubbing vigorously on the gadgets used to eat. Then dry them so after that your parents will have a big smile instead of a big load and pile of dishes. That will really satisfy your parents.
Second, you vacuum crumbs. After you eat a snack I guaranteed you’re going to make crumbs. The crumbs will drive you parents mad and you will wish you never ate food. So help them out by vacuuming the crumbs. If you also clean your siblings crumbs then that’s going to make your parents happier. But don’t make excuses like “Well, I didn’t make that mess, it was my sister or brother”
Last but not least, organize the kitchen drawers. You never know what’s in there. Maybe rotting potatoes or sugar taking over. So help out and remove all these putrid objects and organize the drawers. That’s why we need to organize.
This is how you make your parents happy. I guarantee they will be proud of what you accomplished.

Mar 2020 - The Covid 19 blues

In March, our lives were turned upside down by Covid 19. My sister and I are not allowed to go to school and we take all our classes online. I do A LOT of baking now. I miss seeing friends in person. I chat and see my friends online only. I see and talk to my grandparents at a distance. What has happened to our world? Social distancing means we have to stay away from people outside our home. In public, we should stay at least 6 feet apart and wear face masks.
